Pinoys Need to Be Money Smart

I realized one thing a few months ago after I’ve already spent almost all of the salary again on stuff that I really didn’t need… AGAIN. I don’t remember all my expenses, all I know is that the money is gone and I’m going to have to crawl ’till next payday. Sucks right? Oh hell yeah. I’m sure that I’m not alone with this problem, and I’m happy to say that I’ve already taken steps to address this and so far it’s been working. What bothers me is that after 16 years of education in the Ateneo, I wasn’t able to learn a lot about personal finance.

Philippine schools should integrate personal finance in their curriculum as early as High School. After that, they should give a more advanced course in college. These should be requirements and not optional because people REALLY NEED TO LEARN how to manage their money. I can’t imagine how many millions of Pinoys are facing these problems over and over again. Here’s an example of what I was thinking about:

High School:
Personal Finance 101
- Saving Money
- How to Open a Bank Account
- Tracking Expenses

College:
Advanced Personal Finance
- Banking Basics
- Avoiding Credit Cards
- Business Opportunities
- Investment Options (Mutual Funds, Stocks, etc.)

Classes like these shouldn’t be limited to marketing, management, or business administration courses. If I had these classes when I was in school, then I think I would have saved much more money over since graduation.

Just my two cents.

I agree with you, but I think even in grade school, kids should be taught the importance of savings. My kiddie accounts naman ang banks diba?

Entrepreneurship subject should also be included in college curriculum, (or even highschool!) coz whatever course a stude take, dapat meron din syang alam sa basics ng negosyo. I think that’s one thing I missed since I got an engineering degree. Very limited ang alam ko sa business. :(
