On Press Freedom, Legislation, Legarda, & De Castro

Let me think out loud for a bit. Since Trillanes took Manila Pen hostage, the words “Press Freedom” have become very popular. Remember how the media forgot that a senator bolted out of his hearing and decided to start a millitary uprising? The hot issue became how the government treated the press. This could have been prevented if there were laws that tackle the role of the media in situations like this. We need legislation like this not only to protect the media, but also to make sure that the operations of the police and AFP are not compromised because a reporter decided to sneak in to get exclusive coverage.

Now here’s the rub… we’ve had two media personalities in the Senate for the longest time. Both of them are frontrunners for the 2010 Presidential Elections. Why didn’t Noli pass a law like this when he was Senator? How about Loren?

    Meron limitation sa lahat ng bagay, parang nakakalimutan ng media yan. Alam ko dapat nga may freepress pero dapat din nila intindihin pagnagkakaroon ng mga ganyang kaso kailangan nilang makinig sa ground commander dahil inaalala din nila ang mga kapakanan ng mga taong nakapaligid sa kanina, mapamedia man o sibilyan at pati na rin mga kasamahan nilang mga sundalo.

    I was so pissed with the media over this whole thing. It was clear that they were impeding the police operations and some were even shielding the rebels. It’s no secret that some radical members were supporting the anti-GMA coup plot so no matter how they deny it, I don’t believe them. Can someone knock some sense into their heads and tell them that their right to cover news IS NOT ABSOLUTE?

    I agree with you guys. Hopefully someone in Congress makes a law that will regulate this in the future.
