Food Trip Episode 3: Mongkok

For the third episode of Food Trip, I decided to feature a restaurant that you can easily find in malls. Mich and myself decided to eat Chinese food for tonight and the first one we saw while we were strolling in SM North EDSA was Mongkok in the Car Park/Cyber Zone building. We went in, quickly got seated, and started going through the menu. The waiter recommended we try their seafood so we ordered the fried garlic squid, yang chow fried rice, and chinese beefsteak. Here’s a picture of the dishes:

Mongkok Food

Let’s start with the Fried Garlic Squid since it was the recommended dish. I honestly didn’t like it. It was simply too salty! Each time I took a bite, I felt my kidneys were crying out in pain due to the huge granules of salt which attacked them (LOL). On the plus side, the squid was actually perfectly cooked. The texture was soft – not too mushy and not too rubbery. If they only didn’t put too much salt then it would have made a fine dish.

I have nothing but good words for the Yang Chow and the Chinese Beefsteak. The Yang Chow was good for 2-3 persons and it only cost P120 which is actually quite low compared to other Chinese restaurants. The Beefsteak was also good – the sauce was superb and the beef was just cooked right. My only complaint with the Beefsteak was the servings. It was a bit too small for the hefty price of P190.

In terms of customer service, the waiter was very attentive, and they delivered the food quickly and neatly. My last complaint would probably be the size of the tables. They’re too small! Well… maybe because I’m a big guy, hehe. Here’s the over-all rating:

(1 – Lowest, 5 – Highest)
Restaurant Cleanliness: 3/5
Restaurant Theme: 2/5
Customer Service: 4/5
Quality of Food: 2/5
Price of Food: 3/5
Over-all Rating: 2.8/5

Final bill was around P610 for two viands, one yang chow, and 2 coke light cans. According to Mich, the best thing to eat in Mongkok are their dinsum and siopao. Sadly we weren’t able to order since we were really looking for rice. Maybe next time.

As for coming back, it’s just like any other average Chinese restaurant. Nothing stood out so if I actually had craving for Chinese food again, I might just opt to go to other places that I haven’t been to yet.

garlic spare ribs is actually very good in Mongkok and the siomai as well. I frequent the branch in Power Plant. It’s comfort food for me in terms of chinese cuisine.
