Reflections on the Power of Fiction

I’ve been reading a lot of fiction books lately and there are a few things that I learned that made me realize how powerful books can be. Fiction books can fill your mind and heart with a sense of wonder and longing. You want to break out from the routine and try to live the life of the hero or villain that you’re reading about. It’s not as much as escapism as it is aspirational. You are inspired to apply those same learnings in your life because you want to feel things really happen to you that you read in books. That’s the power of fiction versus self-help or management books. They stir your imagination to the point that it can unearth your true self which was buried in all the daily grind and “normal” thinking.

Fiction and fantasy go together for a reason – because they play on your passions and desires. They draw out long gone emotions of love, hate, lust, romance, anger, and everything else. What’s sad is that books can also have the opposite effect – instead of inspiring, they tear at your life. Books tell you what you’re missing out on and it’s amazing that the emotions you feel are so powerful! So painfully real that you’re “normal”. Sometimes it’s like being Eve in the Garden of Eden. The sweet and mysterious apple is always there, tempting you every second. But you can’t have it.

Regardless of what happens, reading is truly an enriching experience. I never thought that I would come to see books as more that just… books. They’re not just a bunch of words compiled and compressed into paper. They can be a reflection of what you want to be and what you really want to do. And like what I said – they can also be a grim reminder of what’s lacking and missing in life.

Am I even making any sense? Hehe. Sorry about this guys.

it makes sense at a certain point but there’s still no substitute from the creativity of your own imagination. besides, fiction and fantasy no matter how magical are still rooted from reality roughly based on the writer’s experience. it can whet your imagination and spark fantastic ideas within you, but you’ll have to create your own story and not be a mere characters in someone else’s. having said that your point on reading is spot on.
