CBCP: Cha cha after 2010

The CBCP, led by Archbishop Lagdameo, renewed their opposition against Charter Change before 2010. This is exactly my sentiments as I explained in my previous post. The timing is just too fishy and it really looks like PGMA and her gang are up to no good. Let’s do Cha-cha when we have a new President with a fresh mandate. Let’s do it in the right environment, not when it’s clouted with doubt and possibly ill-intent. There’s nothing wrong with shifting to Federalism – but not now.

From Inquirer.Net:

MANILA, Philippines –The country’s Roman Catholic prelates remained wary of the administration’s plan to amend the Constitution, with one archbishop calling the plan a “devious” move to prolong President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s power.

The president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, said changing the Constitution now — a year and a half before the next presidential elections — was unacceptable.

“The CBCP’s opinion, even in the past, is to have a Constitutional Convention, whose members are elected by the people. Secondly, should there be a Charter change, then it should be done after 2010. The new administration should handle it,” Lagdameo, who is also archbishop of Iloilo, said over the Catholic Church’s Radio Veritas.

Lagdameo wondered about the Arroyo administration’s “real motivation” for amending the Constitution. But whatever it is, Lagdameo said the people should be consulted in the process. Otherwise, the CBCP president expressed fears that the problems that the change aims to fix would only worsen.

“If there is no consultation, no communal discernment before acting, the problem will get worse. There is also the possibility that the solution is the wrong solution,” he said.
